The War Against God!

In January 2009 a controversial advertising campaign was initiated using the sides of Britain’s trains and buses. The slogan read: “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”

In 2014, American Atheists launched a provocative campaign in religious deep Southern states showing a young girl writing a letter to Father Christmas: “Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is to skip church! I’m too old for fairy tales.”

Today we are witnessing and unprecedented frontal assault by the leading proponents of the non-theistic or atheistic worldview. One of those leading the attack is evolutionary biologist, famed Oxford professor, and the BBC’s Man of the Year, Dr. Richard Dawkins. He is calling for the eradication of all manifestations of faith: “I am attacking God, all gods, anything and everything supernatural, wherever and whenever they have been or will invented,” declares Dr. Dawkins.

Dawkins writes in his book, The God Delusion that “God is a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, a misogynistic (a hater of women — w.t.), homophobic racist, an infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal (a parent who kills their own child — w.t.), pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”

Robert Reich, the former U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton, believes people who follow God pose a more significant threat to the modern world than terrorists do: “The great conflict of the 21st century,” Reich wrote in The American Prospect, “will not be between the West and terrorism. The true battle will be between modern civilization and anti-modernists; between those who believe in the primacy of the individual and those who believe that human beings owe their allegiance and identity to a higher authority; between those who give priority to life in this world and those who believe that human life is mere preparation for an existence beyond life; between those who believe in science, reason, logic and those who believe that truth revealed through Scripture and religious dogma. Terrorism will disrupt and destroy lives. But terrorism itself is not the greatest danger we face.” Reich accuses those who believe Scripture is a revelation from God of rejecting science, reason, and logic.

The atheist Richard Rorty said that “we are going to go right on to discredit you in the eyes of your children, trying to strip your fundamentalist religious community of dignity, trying to make your views seem silly rather than discussible.”

The real reason for atheism is expressed candidly by atheistic professor of Philosophy and Law, Thomas Nagle: “I want atheism to be true and am made uneasy by the fact that some of the most intelligent and well-informed people I know are religious believers. It isn’t just that I don’t believe in God and, naturally, hope that I’m right in my belief. It’s that I hope there is no God! I don’t want there to be a God; I don’t want the universe to be like that.”

We now find ourselves in a “whatever” culture. Whatever goes, whatever works, whatever makes you happy, whatever, whatever, whatever. Time magazine even went so far as to declare YOU (yes, you) the “Person of the Year” in their December 25, 2006 issue.

This war against God shouldn’t surprise us or shock us, or seem as something new. In John 15, our Lord Jesus is sharing with His disciples in those final fleeting moments before the unbelieving world demonstrates its absolute hatred of God by crucifying Him at Golgotha. Jesus says to these disciples and to His disciples throughout every age: “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours” (John 15:18-20). “Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause’” (John 15:23-25).

In Romans 1:30, the Apostle Paul is giving a list of the characteristics of the ungodly. Breaking in at the middle of verse we read, ” … back biters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents.”

This only serves to corroborate what the Bible has declared emphatically: that all men, by nature, hate God. The first indication that this is true is that we vehemently deny it. We have such a high opinion of our basic goodness that the majority of us would never condescend to such a level as to actually admit that we hate God. Although it is true that mankind does not hate the God that his imagination creates, nevertheless, they hate God as He has revealed Himself in Scripture and in Christ.

It’s hard to read their books or watch their interviews without concluding that the New Atheists think they are a lot smarter than the rest of us, and especially the rest of us who happen to be Christians. In the past, atheists attempted to mask this arrogance; now it is flaunted. The change occurred in 2003 when Daniel Dennett and Richard Dawkins decided that atheists needed a less offensive name. The term chosen to spruce up atheism was “bright.” A “Bright” was defined as someone who holds “a naturalistic worldview,” which is “free of supernatural and mystical elements.”

How does the Christian combat this war against God by sinners successfully? It isn’t with more religion, but with the message that a living, loving, lasting relationship with the only true and living God is available through the grace and truth of the gospel of God.

The gospel message became a historical reality in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ who, according to scripture was full of “grace and truth.” (John 1:14) This statement reveals the importance and imperativeness of believing, behaving and broadcasting the balanced message of a grace and truth gospel.

The truth of the gospel declares that we are far more sinful and flawed than we ever dared believe. The grace of the gospel declares that we are more accepted and loved in Christ than we ever dared hope. Only the truth of the gospel declares we are so sinful that we need to be saved utterly by grace. The grace of God allows a person to see that they are in the hands of an all-powerful, perfectly holy, yet loving and merciful God. Without knowledge of the seriousness of our sin, the payment of the cross seems trivial and does not electrify or transform.

“The gospel shows us a God far more holy than the religious conservative legalist can bear (he had to die because we could not satisfy his holy demands) and yet far more merciful than irreligious liberal relativist can conceive (he had to die because he loved us and that was the only way of honoring the law of God and extending the life of God). Without a knowledge of Christ’s completely satisfying life and death, the knowledge of sin would crush us or move us to deny and repress it. The gospel is not that we go from being irreligious to being religious, but that we realize that our reasons for both our religiosity and our irreligiosity were essentially the same and essentially wrong. We were seeking to be our own saviors and thereby keep control of our own life.”(Tim Keller)

We have a dangerous, demanding, yet supremely delightful and destiny-fulfilling God-authored, Christ-centered, cross-shaped, and resurrection empowered –WHOLE GOSPEL, that is not just in word only – but in power in the Holy Spirit, with much assurance! God desires that His people recover and are captivated and motivated with a passion for His-Story – the Big, Good News Story that’s played out on the stage of life with a God-entranced view of the world; that’s hope-filled, joy-abounding, Spirit-empowered, Christ-exalting, and devil-crushing, and world-conquering! And it is too good to keep to ourselves! So, tell it out and shout it out, and let the whole wayward world know that GOD is great and good and the gospel is the greatest news ever to fall own human ears!

When we trust and tell the whole gospel without apology, God will save a world of people out of practical and practicing atheism for His glory!

One Response to “The War Against God!”
  1. paul tsika says:

    Bro Wade,
Great reminder to me of the battle that will always rage against the Kingdom and it’s Christ. What’s really hard for me to understand is how supposedly intelligent men think. For instance, why would Dawkins curse and call names about someone who he doesn’t believe exists. One of us is not that smart. I felt grieved for him when I read his quote, so bitter and full of hate. I prayed for him.
Romans 1:22 says, “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.”
Blessings my friend and keep up the good work of the Kingdom,
