Experiencing Freedom from Idolatry’s Charms (Colossians 3:1-5)

Idolatry is more than just an ancient problem of the ignorant, it’s more than just a pagan problem of people today who live in remote jungles – it’s a human problem – a modern problem, and a persistent problem for every Christian! Underneath every sin is idolatry in general. Our idol-making minds create false gods or false images of the one true God and then trust them to make us happy, give us peace, pleasure, purpose, and power in life. Since God desires that we be truly happy and knows that this happiness can come from Him alone, idolatry is seen to be very serious and is attacked very powerfully and pervasively.

Colossians 3:1-5

3:1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. (ESV)
